Today I learn to tell the difference — and never unlearn it.
Leather is a living material, and that is the whole point. It breathes. It warms to your body and, with wear, follows your forms in their most flattering version — something no synthetic can imitate. Faux leather is a different material entirely, and once you know what to look for, you'll feel it before you read a single label.
It breathes; plastic cannot. Real leather moves with you and with the weather. Synthetic "leather" does the opposite: it turns cold the moment the air cools and stifling as soon as it's warm — because plastic can't regulate the way a natural skin does.
It's a considered use of a natural by-product. Leather is a by-product of production — a material that already exists. At EVA ROJE we simply take that chance and give it a second life, as pieces made to be kept for years rather than discarded in a season. There is a quiet responsibility in that, and a quiet luxury too.
It comes in more forms than you'd think. Natural, suede, patent, aged, glossy, matte, and more — each with its own hand and its own way of catching the light. Part of the craft is knowing which leather a piece is meant to be.
Why real leather costs what it does. Fine leather is chosen hide by hide. To achieve a single, consistent shade across one jacket, an atelier sorts through a great many skins — because the colour and the quality have to be exactly right. That selection is invisible in the finished piece and entirely present in how it looks, feels and lasts.
How to tell, with your own hands. Real leather is warm and alive, with a grain that isn't perfectly uniform and a scent that's quiet and unmistakable. It ages into a patina — softening, deepening, becoming more itself. Faux leather does the opposite: it cracks, peels and flakes, usually within a season or two.
The origin matters. Italy has refined leather craft for centuries — from the tanneries of Solofra to the ateliers that finish each piece by hand. That heritage is why "made in Italy" still means something in leather.
At EVA ROJE we work only in hand-selected European leather, chosen for suppleness and longevity. It costs more because it lasts longer — and because it feels, and behaves, like nothing else against the skin.
